Disaster Response and Lessons Learned
Collaboration for a Stronger Future
The Structural Engineering Institute (SEI), the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA), and the Coalition of American Structural Engineers (CASE) have come together to advance the profession of structural engineering. This Summer Series continues an ongoing commitment to innovate, lead, and empower in structural engineering.
Expanding Expertise Across Disciplines
This initiative brings together experts and thought leaders from across our organizations to deliver insightful, cutting-edge educational content. Covering a range of topics that span our collective expertise, this series is designed to strengthen your knowledge, broaden your perspective, and inspire the next generation of structural engineers. Each webinar follows an article in that month of structuremag.org.
A Foundation for the Future
Now in its second year, the Summer Series continues to grow as a collaborative effort to deliver timely, relevant, and high-impact education to the structural engineering community. What began as a shared initiative has evolved into an ongoing platform for bringing together leading voices, practical insights, and forward-thinking ideas.
As we look ahead, this series will continue to expand and adapt, providing valuable learning opportunities that reflect the changing needs of the profession and strengthening the connections across our organizations and the engineers we serve.

More About the Sessions
Session 1: Tuesday, June 23, 1:00-2:00 PM ET
Answering the Call: Structural Engineers, NCSEA, and Disaster Response, Presented by NCSEA
When a disaster strikes your community, will you be ready to help? This webinar equips structural engineers with the critical training and real-world decision-making skills needed to conduct post-disaster safety assessments, so when lives are on the line, you can provide the calm, confident answers communities desperately need. Using nationally recognized methodologies (ATC-20 and ATC-45), you'll learn how to rapidly evaluate damaged structures, apply standardized placarding systems, and recognize when a building is safe to reenter — skills that go far beyond everyday engineering practice. You'll also learn how to join the national Disaster Response Alliance roster, connecting you to a coordinated network of engineers ready to deploy when the next disaster hits.
About The Speaker

Principal and Department Manager, Bennett & Pless, Inc.
Klaus Perkins, PE, SE, is a Principal and Department Manager at Bennett & Pless, Inc. He serves as a Structures Specialist with North Carolina Heavy Rescue teams and is actively involved in disaster preparedness and response as a member of NCSEA’s Structural Engineering Emergency Response (SEER) Committee.
Session 2: Tuesday, July 28, 1:00-2:00 PM ET
Natural Disasters / Good Samaritan Protection, Presented by CASE
Structural engineers are often called upon to respond in the aftermath of natural and manmade disasters, but doing so comes with both opportunities and risks. This session will provide an experienced-based overview of disaster response, drawing on lessons learned from events such as Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina, the September 11 attacks, and other common disasters including wildfires, floods, and earthquakes. Participants will explore the range of services engineers provide during disaster recovery—from structural integrity inspections to damage assessments and debris monitoring—and examine the legal and contractual considerations that come with this work. The session will also cover the current landscape of Good Samaritan protections across the country, along with the importance of on-call and master service agreements to reduce risk and ensure effective engagement before disaster strikes.

Session 3: Tuesday, August 25, 1:00-2:00 PM ET
Natural Disasters and Their Impacts on Codes and Standards, Presented by SEI
In the aftermath of disasters, people are often left wondering what they could have done to prevent the catastrophic loss of life and property damage. In some cases, the answer is in policy change, such as warning notification systems or mandatory evacuation procedures. In the world of codes and standards, we examine the performance of engineered structures, looking for lessons learned and areas where our codes and standards can be improved. Major storm events can and do provide the data and observations needed to advance our abilities to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public.
